Hit the Ground Running: Lessons from the African Proverb

In the African savanna, every morning a gazelle wakes up knowing it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning, a lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you are the lion or the gazelle—when the sun comes up, you’d better be running. This powerful proverb offers us a vital lesson: to survive and thrive, we must hit the ground running each day.

This begs the question: Are you prepared to start each day with this mindset? To wake up ready to face the day, preparation is key. The success of your morning often hinges on the actions you take the night before.

Defining and setting clear goals is crucial for your next day's success. Not sure where to start? Take this approach: Define what you want to achieve the next day. Whether it’s a fitness goal, a work task, or a personal project, having a clear objective helps you focus your energy and effort. The preparation doesn't stop there. You also need to create a schedule or a to-do list for the next day. Prioritize your tasks and allocate specific time slots to ensure you’re working efficiently. One of the easiest and fastest ways to get ahead the following day is to lay out your workout clothes, prepare your meals, and organize your work items. These small actions can save time and reduce decision fatigue in the morning.

I also recommend that you establish a proper and easy-to-follow nighttime routine. Some easy examples include winding down at least an hour before bedtime. This means turning off screens, dimming the lights, and engaging in relaxing activities like reading or meditation. The use of screens right before bed can have adverse effects on your ability to get good rest, but it is typically one of the first things we grab or click on when entering bed. Leave the bed for sleeping only, and your rest will improve dramatically. Next, I recommend you reflect on the day you just had. Not enough of us do that, even though it is an easy way to improve our efficiency. Spend a few minutes reflecting on what you accomplished and what could be improved. This reflection can provide insights for better planning and performance. Lastly, become intentional about your upcoming day. Before going to sleep, mentally prepare yourself for the next day. Visualize your success and affirm your commitment to hitting the ground running.

When the morning comes, we can create a much better experience by implementing a few changes to our patterns and morning habits. First, start with a positive mindset. Begin your day with a positive affirmation or gratitude practice by sending someone you appreciate a gratitude text. A positive mindset can boost your motivation and productivity. Replace "I have to go to work" or "I have to go to the gym" with "I GET to." After a great start, make sure you follow the plan you set forth the night before. But remember, nothing goes perfectly. Allow yourself some flexibility, but don't let yourself get bogged down with tasks that can wait. Unexpected challenges may arise, and your ability to adjust and keep moving forward is key to success.

Just like the lion and the gazelle, we must be prepared to start running as soon as the day begins. By preparing the night before, we set ourselves up for a successful, productive day. Embrace the lessons of the African proverb and make each morning a sprint towards your goals.

Ready to hit the ground running? Start tonight. Plan your day, set your goals, and prepare your environment. Tomorrow morning, you’ll be ready to face any challenge that comes your way.
